Program Notes:
This piece is not really a fanfare. It was suggested to write one- but I think it was more about the instrumentation- what do you do with such a strange group of instruments anyway? I thought about the form of a fanfare though- Fanfare for the Queen’s Army, Fanfare for the Motherland, Fanfare for the Industrial-Military Complex. Who deserves a fanfare? What is behind all this patriotic expression? So instead here is a fanfare for subverting expectations, for doing something strange, for asking why these different ideas cannot go together.
